Bus Emergency-Exit Inspection: 90-Day Large-Fleet Log
Updated October 2026. This page is for a bus emergency-exit inspection log, not a 90-day requirement for every DOT-regulated vehicle. FMCSA says pushout windows, emergency doors, and emergency-door marking lights on buses must be inspected at least every 90 days. The carrier should retain the applicable test records. See FMCSA’s Part 396 passenger-carrier guide.
Keep a vehicle-level record
- Identify each bus by company number or other identifier, and record the inspection date.
- Record the result for each applicable pushout window, emergency door, and emergency-door marking light. Note a failed item and the corrective action; do not treat an unchecked box as proof of a test.
- Assign the repair or follow-up and document when the item was resolved under the carrier’s maintenance process. Keep the record with the vehicle’s inspection and maintenance history.
- Set the next due date for that bus based on the actual inspection date, rather than a fixed “odd month” calendar.
FMCSA provides a bus emergency-exit inspection example form. Use the current rule and your operation’s applicable requirements to decide whether a bus and each item are covered. This 90-day check does not replace the separate annual periodic inspection or driver inspection duties.
When a repair needs coordination
For maintenance scheduling, repair-vendor follow-up, and vehicle record organization, see LBC Fleet’s outsourced fleet-management service. The carrier remains responsible for required inspections and safe vehicle operation; this link does not claim LBC certifies a bus inspection.
About the older LBC form: A 2020 PDF titled “90 Day Inspection Form” used the phrase “required for all DOT regulated vehicles” and suggested odd-month timing. That wording is too broad for this bus-specific requirement, so this page points to FMCSA’s example instead of presenting the old PDF as a current compliance form.
