Safety Measurement System

To look up a carrier’s Safety Measurement System (SMS) information, start with FMCSA’s official SMS search. Search by USDOT number when you have it; a name search can return similarly named carriers.

Read the result carefully

  1. Confirm the USDOT number and carrier identity before reading the record.
  2. Check the site’s data date. SMS information is updated periodically, so a result is not necessarily a real-time view.
  3. Do not treat an SMS prioritization symbol as a federal safety rating. FMCSA explains that distinction on the search page. For a carrier’s public safety rating, use the SAFER Company Snapshot.
  4. Some SMS information is not publicly displayed. A motor carrier can sign in to view additional data for its own operation.

If reviewing the data reveals follow-up work on your own records or audit preparation, see LBC Fleet’s compliance and driver-support services to find the relevant service. SMS data alone does not determine a carrier’s overall safety condition.
